Maintenance

At Babù Antwerp, we deliberately choose timeless materials. Of course, they’re often handmade and timeless—but only if you take proper care of them. This guide will help you do just that.

Natural stone (alabaster, marble, travertine, and onyx)

Natural stone is naturally porous and sensitive to moisture, acids, and harsh chemicals. Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Blot stains immediately; never rub.
Do not use harsh cleaning agents, vinegar, lemon, or all-purpose cleaners. These will damage the surface.
Do not put in the dishwasher.
Protect from prolonged contact with water, wine, oil, or acidic liquids.
Alabaster in particular: alabaster is exceptionally sensitive to moisture. Never submerge it in water, not even briefly. A damp cloth is sufficient.
Natural stone bears the marks of time. A light patina or discoloration is not a flaw; it is character. Natural stone (Alabaster, marble, travertine & onyx)

Scheepskins

Sheepskins require little maintenance; nature has already done the work.Do not wash in the washing machine. This will irreparably damage the fibers and the structure.
Air out the skin regularly outdoors, preferably on a damp day, in the snow, or in the fresh air.
In the snow: place the skin briefly in the snow and shake it out thoroughly. This is a natural and gentle cleaning method.
Remove stains by gently dabbing with a damp cloth. Never rub.
Shake the fleece out thoroughly from time to time to keep the fibers loose and airy, and comb it with a wool comb.
A sheepskin is alive. It adapts, breathes with you, and becomes softer the more it is used.

Linen

Linen is one of the most durable natural fibers, but it does require gentle care.Wash at a low temperature (30°C) using a mild detergent.
Avoid the dryer. Linen dries best when laid flat or hung to air dry. This helps it retain its shape and texture much longer.
If desired, iron while slightly damp, or embrace the natural wrinkles—they’re part of the charm.
Store in a dry, well-ventilated place.
Linen becomes more beautiful with every use. The fabric becomes softer.

Ceramics

Ceramics from Babù Antwerp are often handmade and require a little extra care.Hand washing is always preferable to using the dishwasher.
Do not use abrasive cleaners or hard sponges—these will scratch the glaze.
Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as placing a cold piece of ceramics directly into a hot oven.
Store stackable ceramics with a soft cloth or felt coaster between them to prevent scratches.
Each piece is unique. Small variations in color or shape are a testament to craftsmanship—not imperfections.

Candles

Candles require more care than people realize; here’s how to burn them safely and beautifully.Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each use. This prevents black smoke and ensures an even flame.
When using a candle for the first time, let it burn long enough so that the entire surface melts. This prevents a tunnel from forming in the candle.
Never place candles in a draft, as this causes uneven burning and soot formation.
Store candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight to prevent discoloration or warping.
Choose a high-quality candle made of soy wax or beeswax that doesn’t drip. This prevents stains on your natural stone.
